BETTE LAWHON

Art

In art, there are no rules, only ways,
and some ways are better than others.

 "More Than Man Enough"
Self portrait from life (using 2 mirrors).
Pastel on paper.

"More Than Man Enough"  is one of my earliest self-portraits.
The tomboy pose expresses the dilemma that I faced as a young
female artist in a world that primarily validates the work of male
artists and overlooks the strength and talent of women (and
often pays them less than men, I might add). The title is my answer
to those that wonder whether a woman would be fit enough
to achieve the same tasks that a professional male artist
undertakes. I assure them that I am "More Than Man Enough"
because I am a woman."                                - Bette Lawhon
